Why should I buy travel insurance?
Travel insurance provides coverage in the event of a medical emergency while you travel outside your home province. Travel insurance typically insures hospital and medical expenses incurred during medical emergencies, and provides assistance for your safe return home. Certain types of travel insurance also cover some of the risks you may encounter if your travel plans are interrupted or cancelled.

If I get sick when I’m travelling, won’t my Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan pay for my medical expenses?
Alberta Health Care provides only limited coverage for medical treatment and hospital costs outside of Canada. If you are injured or become ill while abroad, government plans may pay only a portion of your medical bills. Substantial medical bills, amounting to thousands of dollars, may have to be paid out of your own pocket.

I’m only going to the United States for a few days. Do I really need travel insurance?
Yes—an illness or accident can happen at any time, whether you’re on the road for a few days or a few months. Health care is very expensive in the United States and very little of this cost is covered by Alberta Health Care. For a short trip, the cost of travel insurance is minimal, and it gives you peace of mind.

Do I need medical travel insurance when I travel within Canada?
Yes. Provincial government health care plans limit the amount they reimburse their residents for the cost of emergency medical services incurred while in another province. Ambulance service, emergency dental treatment and prescription drugs, for example, might need to be paid for out of your own pocket.

I don’t need travel medical insurance but I need other travel coverage. Can I purchase non-medical insurance separately?
Yes. Non-medical insurance is available. ATB Travel Protection Premium One Trip insurance plan options include Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption and Trip Interruption Insurance; Baggage Insurance; Accident Insurance; and Rental Car Protection.

When should I purchase my travel insurance?
Purchase coverage before leaving on your trip. Remember to purchase ATB Travel Protection travel insurance for your entire trip, including the day you leave and the day you return. Call 1-877-ATB-1888 or click here. Visiting Canada? You can purchase coverage at any time, before or after your arrival in Canada.

What should I look for in travel insurance?
Travel insurance should provide coverage for: emergency hospital and medical expenses over and above the coverage provided by Alberta Health Care and your employee benefits plan; coverage for existing medical conditions; prescription drugs; ambulances; emergency dental; baggage; and trip cancellation and trip interruption.

Why do I need additional travel insurance if I have coverage through my credit card?
Your credit card may provide basic travel insurance, but you must read the fine print to find out exactly what’s covered, under what conditions and what the limits are. The coverage you have may apply for a limited time period, or be available only to a certain age. Note, some credit card coverage may only be applicable if your trip is paid for with your credit card.

Do you offer special family prices?
Yes. Family rates are available for Premium Annual and One Trip plans.

To qualify for family coverage, you and your spouse (legal or common-law) must be 59 years and under to purchase. Your children can be included in family coverage as long as they are unmarried, 21 years or under and still living with you; or if they are 25 years or under and attending school full time. Dependent children over 21 years of age with a mental or physical handicap are also covered.

Companion rates are also available for Premium Annual and One Trip emergency hospital/medical insurance, and Visitors to Canada emergency medical insurance.

I am over age 60 and I have a few medical conditions. Is it still possible for me to purchase travel insurance?
Yes. You are eligible to purchase Premium Annual or One Trip emergency hospital/medical insurance, although some exclusions and limitations may apply depending on your health. Please refer to the official policy wording of the insurance you are interested in purchasing, for further details. Most of our plans have no maximum age restriction to purchase; our Holiday Packages have a maximum age limit of 74.

Do I really need to read my travel insurance booklet?
Yes. Your travel insurance booklet includes the terms of your insurance policy. As with any insurance, some of those terms may limit the benefits payable to you, so it’s in your best interest to be familiar with the policy. Also, please remember to take the booklet with you on your trip so you can refer to it if necessary.
