Registered Retirement Income Funds:
How Much Will My Minimum Payment Be?
The payment schedule established by the federal government ensures that
your RRIF will last for your lifetime if you take only the minimum payment.
There are two formulas for calculating your annual minimum payment:
- Qualifying RRIFs are those opened before January 1, 1993;
- Non-Qualifying RRIFs are those opened after December 31, 1992.
To determine the minimum annual payment for your RRIF, multiply the
appropriate percentage from the table by the value of your RRIF at
the beginning
of the year.
To determine your personalized RRIF income schedule, please consult

Use this formula to calculate the percentage for ages under 65: 1 / 90 - age = percentage
Example: On January 1, 1999, John is 78 years old. His RRIF has a value
of $50,000. because his RRIF was purchased in September 1990, it is
a Qualifying RRIF. The minimum annual payment for 1999 is:
$50,000 x 8.33% = $4,165.00
