Connecting with the community

Posted on: February 22, 2016 | Author: ATB Business & Agriculture

Owning a business presents a terrific opportunity for entrepreneurs to connect with their communities. And it’s a part of small business life that Monita Chapman was eager to embrace.

The owner of Simply Supper, a meal preparation business, came up with the idea for Simply Supper Helps when her late stepfather was in care. Each year to commemorate his birthday, Simply Supper Helps hosts a meal drive to fill the freezers of families who are struggling to get supper on the table. They might be dealing with an ill family member, the loss of a loved one, or an injury at work. Last year 100 volunteers made over 1,000 meals for more than 50 families.

Monita counts Simply Supper Helps as being the greatest triumph in her business life.

“I consider myself a caring person and want to help families ease the chaos around mealtime,” she says.

Simply Supper Helps also hosts Lemonade Stand Day where kids are given the tools to set up lemonade stands, with the proceeds going to charity. The first year raised nearly $4,000 for Ronald McDonald House. This past year brought in $23,000 for Edmonton’s Stollery Children’s Hospital.

Monita remains committed to the meal drive and Lemonade Stand Day. While it may be tempting to try new things all the time, choosing an initiative (or two) is probably a better way to make a difference, and earn a reputation for being a committed member of the community.
