Franchise Focus: Q & A with a franchisee

Posted on: March 07, 2016 | Author: ATB Business & Agriculture

Name: Sal Naim

My business: MR MIKES SteakhouseCasual

My favourite thing about owning a franchise is:

A. Owning a recognizable brand.
B. Not needing as much creativity as a small business.
C. Being my own boss.
D. Building my franchise empire.

The scariest part of owning a franchise is: That someday the goals, values and aspirations of the franchisee and franchisor become different.

I am currently focused on:

A. Running my franchise.
B. Expanding to another location.
C. Brainstorming new ideas.
D. All of the above.

The biggest challenge I faced in my first year was: Handling the amount of information sent at me, and staffing.

The best business advice I was ever given is: If you’re having trouble finding a solution to a problem change a thought or two about how you’re seeing and interpreting the problem to find the solution.

I bank with ATB because:

A. They understand my business.
B. It is convenient.
C. I want to support an Albertan financial institution.
D. They support my community.

My best franchise-owning memory: Winning the 2014 restaurant of the year with our Bonnyville location after only having been open for a couple of years.

One thing I wish I had done differently: Nothing! Use every mistake as a learning experience opportunity.

I felt like a successful franchise owner when:

A. I wrote my cheque to buy the franchise.
B. I opened the doors.
C. I made my first profit.
D. I’ll let you know when it happens.
E. Other: When kids in the community tell me they love my restaurant!

When I first started out, I wish someone had told me: There is no such thing as a work/life balance. I’ve come to grips with it now but there is no such thing as being an entrepreneur part-time. It means changing who you are and how you view your role in this world.
