 Successful Interview Tips

The interview can be the most stressful step in seeking new employment.

The right focus and preparation can help you feel confident in your ability to shine in the interview. Here are some guidelines when coming in for an interview with ATB Financial:

  1. Prepare and practice for the interview.

Be comfortable with all types of interview questions, including competency-based behavioural descriptive questions. Behavioural descriptive questions ask you about a specific time in the past when you demonstrated a particular competency—what the situation was, what role you played, and what the outcome was. An easy way to prepare for this type of question is to review the job accountabilities of the role. Think about what competencies are required to fulfill those accountabilities.

Create a list of all the competencies and highlight what past experience best illustrates how you have successfully demonstrated this competency. Note the specific situation, what action you specifically took, and the outcome.

Practice mock interviews with a friend or family member. Listen and assess your response. Ask for feedback from others if you need. Practice will increase your comfort and confidence with the interview process.

  2. Research the company and position ahead of time.

A great place to start is to understand the company, the culture, and its business goals. Conducting this research can help you assess whether the organization is the right place for you.
  3. Come prepared with questions that your research wasn’t able to answer.

Asking good questions can demonstrate that you have done your research and are interested in fully understanding the requirements of the role, such as what it is like to work in the organization. Hiring managers are looking for individuals who will be successful in the role and who fit well with the organization’s culture.
  4. To make a great first impression, come dressed professionally and well groomed.

  5. Arrive on time.

Plan your travel route ahead of time and consider whether you are traveling during peak hours. Avoid being late and raising concern for your planning and organizational skills. If unforeseen circumstances come up and you anticipate you will be late, ensure you contact the hiring manager as soon as possible.
  6. Plan to be interviewed by a panel of interviewers.

At ATB, interviews are often conducted by more than one interviewer.
  7. Answer the questions the best you can and ask for clarification if you need.

  8. Come prepared with references and any other supporting material you feel showcases your abilities.

Many candidates share past performance assessments and written recognition of accomplishments, including copies of award certificates, to highlight their past successes.
  9. Relax and smile.

Hiring managers understand that interviewing can be a difficult process. Try to remember that the interview is your opportunity to share who you are and to learn more about the organization.
