ATB marks Pink Shirt Day

At ATB Financial, we believe that bullying should never be a part of growing up, and should never be part of any workplace. This year, we will once again be marking Pink Shirt Day. On February 22, 2017, we invite our team members, customers, and all Albertans to lead the charge against bullying by wearing pink.

Pink Shirt Day began as a small but powerful act in Nova Scotia when, after seeing a classmate bullied for wearing a pink shirt, a group of students decided to wear pink to take a stand against bullying. Today, it is a show of support for anti-bullying initiatives around the world, raising awareness about bullying and the tactics each of us can use to stop it.

ATB is also pleased to support programs like Camp fYrefly and fYrefly in Schools – a program led by the University of Alberta that increases awareness of the damaging impacts of homophobic and transphobic bullying in junior and senior high schools. It aims to equip students with the tools they need to challenge prejudice and discrimination.

What is bullying? According to the Government of Alberta’s Bully Free Alberta website, "bullying is a deliberate and repeated hostile activity marked by an imbalance of power, intent to harm, and/or a threat of aggression.” Bullying can take different forms, including:

  • Verbal: taunts, name-calling and put-downs, threats and intimidation.
  • Social: exclusion from peer groups, ganging up, or group teasing.
  • Physical: unwanted touching and assault.
  • Cyber: using a computer or other technology to harass or threaten.

Did you know?

  • Bullying happens once every seven minutes on the playground and once every 25 minutes in the classroom (Pepler et al., 1997).
  • In the workplace, one person in six has been bullied and one in five has witnessed a co-worker being bullied (Canada Safety Council).
