Alberta Flood: To air is humane

Note: Amarjit Rakhra is doubly well known in Calgary. He is the branch manager of ATB Saddleridge and, for 17 years, he has hosted a community cable TV show. When the floods happened, his thoughts turned to action, and that meant hitting the airwaves.

As we all know, thousands of families in our city were affected by the floods last week. As families try to get back to their normal lives, RED-FM 106.7, a Calgary community radio station organized a radiothon on Thursday. I got the opportunity to volunteer and air my thoughts and request donations from the South Asian community.

We asked for just about everything. Canned food, frozen food, fruits, vegetables, baby food, eggs, bread and dairy products or cash.

I am pleased to share that we raised $175,000 and 7.5 tons of food for the flood victims. All food went to the Calgary Food Bank. Thanks to all for the enormous help and support.
