This past fall, ATB approached both schools to design a new ATB Financial MasterCard with the theme Festival City. A finalist from each school was chosen, and now Albertans can vote in a head-to-head battle between both schools.

The winning designer will get a $1,000 prize, as will the winning school!

About the Pixel Blue card:

Designer: Alexandrea Haines
Program: 2-D Character Animation Program

Design rationale:

“A common theme in a lot of festivals is the rainbow of colours! I feel like it's practically become a piece of Edmonton’s identity—our light up bridge, the legislative building, our bright art installations, painted crosswalks... My original concept had all the rainbow ribbons bold and emerging from points off the microchip. I lowered the opacity, moved some around and they began looking more like northern lights, a phenomenon I personally love, especially when the experience is shared with a group. So it seemed very fitting to me.”

About the designer:

“I moved to Edmonton 10 years ago. We moved around because my dad was a Canadian Peacekeeper for 28 years. I currently live with him, my mom, younger sister, my older sister, my adorable nephew and our 2 big dogs. I'm 23 (24 in a month), and I am pursuing a career in art and design because before I even went to kindergarten my grandpa was teaching me drawing techniques and how to mentally visualize, and I've been creating in all my spare time ever since.”

About the NAIT card:

Designer: Teri Bloor
Program: Digital Media and IT

Design rationale:

“I tried to think outside of the box and craft a piece that was simple enough for a small credit card but clever enough to represent the idea “festival city” without limiting itself to specific festivals. The carnival ticket I crafted should be recognizable among young and old—it is iconic and timeless. This design appeals to people who want to have fun and those who can appreciate a touch of humour.”

About the designer:

“I've always loved art. I enjoy drawing, painting and anything crafty. I never thought I would pursue a career in this field, but I always secretly hoped I could. I enjoy the design process. There is always something to learn, whether it's a new technique or a new style to try out. When I finally create the look I want, I get a great sense of accomplishment knowing I did my best.”
