The Board of Directors

The directors of ATB Financial are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. They are each highly qualified, and their experience represents the various regions and industries critical to the success of the Alberta economy. The Board is comprised of individuals wih financial acumen, industry experience, and professional qualifications to ensure breadth of knowledge, independence and a diversity of perspective and experience.

Garnet Altwasser   Garnet Altwasser

Garnet Altwasser (Brooks) is the former President and CEO of Lakeside Farm Industries Ltd. Garnet has served on numerous boards in agribusiness — as Director of the Alberta Division of the Canadian Feed Manufacturer Association, Director of Alberta Cattle Feeders Association, Chairman of Canadian Meat Council and Chairman of Veterinary Infectious Diseases Organization.

Robert G. Brawn   Robert G. Brawn

Robert G. Brawn (Calgary) is Chairman Emeritus and a director of Canetic Resources Trust. He is currently a director of the Parkland Income Trust and Black Diamond Income Trust, Chairman and director of Grande Cache Coal Corporation and the Van Horne Institute (a transportation study group) and several private corporations. In addition to having extensive experience in the energy sector, previously Mr. Brawn was chairman of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and the Independent Petroleum Association of Canada and co-chairman of the Calgary Economic Authority and a director of OCO 88 (the Calgary Olympic Games Committee). He is chairman of the Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation and the Brawn Foundation.

  Robert C. (Bob) Clark

Robert C. (Bob) Clark (Carstairs) is the former Ethics Commissioner for Alberta's Legislative Assembly. He was named Alberta's first Information and Privacy Commissioner in 1995, responsible for upholding the access and privacy rights of Alberta's citizens with respect to information held by public bodies. Mr. Clark also spent 11 years in the private sector in public relations consulting. He recently served as chairman of the Electoral Boundaries Commission, and has held office as President of the Council on Governmental Ethics Laws.

Art Froehlich (Calgary) is a partner of AdFarm, one of North America's largest agricultural marketing communications companies. Mr. Froehlich has spent the last 25 years working in primary food production, agri-business and agrimarketing in Canada, United States, Europe, South America and Asia. In 2005, he received the distinguished Agrologist Award from the Alberta Institue of Agrologists. Mr. Froehlich serves as chair of the Executive Committee for the Agricultural Biotechnology International Conference (ABIC) 2007, to be held in Calgary.

    Joan Hertz

Joan Hertz, Q.C. (Edmonton) is the former Corporate Counsel, Strategic Affairs for Capital Health and is a lawyer and strategic consultant.  She has extensive community board involvement including acting as Director for Alberta’s Promise, Kid’s Kottage Foundation, and formerly the Edmonton Catholic Cemeteries Board and St. Thomas More Lawyers Guild.  She is involved in the selection of judges and is currently Chair of the Provincial Court Nominating Committee and past member of the Federal Judicial Advisory Committee.

Brian Hesje (Edmonton) is the Chairman of the Board of Fountain Tire Ltd., which is recognized as one of Canada's 50 Best Managed Private Companies. He has extensive entrepreneurial and small business experience. Mr. Hesje is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, and a certified member of the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Linda Hohol (Calgary) is the former president of the TSX Venture Exchange, Canada's public venture capital marketplace. She also serves as a director of the Calgary Airport Authority, EllisDon Construction Canadian Foundation for Innovation, and United Way of Calgary. Ms. Hohol co-chaired the United Way of Calgary 2006 campaign, where $50 million was raised. Ms. Hohol has also been a director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Alberta Electric Systems Operator, among others. Until 1999, Ms. Hohol was Executive Vice President, Wealth Management with CIBC.

Bern Kotelko (Vegreville) is President of Highland Feeders Ltd., and serves as co-chair for Alberta Prion Research and a director for the Alberta Economic Development Authority. Mr. Kotelko was named among the Alberta Venture 50 Most Influential in 2007 and is the recipient of several Growing Alberta Leadership Awards, a University of Alberta Alumni Award of Excellence, a National Environmental Stewardship Award, an Alberta Insitute of Agrologists Distinguished Agrologist Award, an AsTec Award for Environmental Innovation and an Alberta Cattle Commission Environmental Stewardship Award. He has received certification from the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Brian McCook (Lloydminster) is a member of the Alberta Institute of Chartered Accountants and is President of Great Bend Financial Corp., a company providing management services and assistance to various family-controlled corporations. Previously, he held senior management positions in the oilfield services industry and the building materials and construction industry. Mr. McCook is a founding director of Science Alberta, a past member of the Audit Committee of the Province of Alberta and a past member of the Alberta Financial Review Commission. He has served on the boards of various community organizations

Skip McDonald (Calgary) is a Principal with Horton-McDonald Developments, specializing in real estate investment, development and management in Alberta. He is an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel with the Calgary Highlanders, and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Mr. McDonald also serves on the board of the Calgary Health Region.

Al O'Brien (Barrhead) is a former Deputy Provincial Treasurer. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Public Economics (University of Alberta), a Senior Fellow of the C.D. Howe Institute, a Director of Cordiant Capital (Montreal), a member of the Investment Committee of the Alberta Teachers Retirement Fund, and a member of the Advisory Council of the Institute of Intergovernmental Relations (Queen's University). Mr. O'Brien also served as director with the Alberta Pension Administration Corporation, the Alberta Municipal Finance Corporation and the Credit Union Deposit Guarantee Corporation.

Bob Splane   Robert (Bob) Splane

Bob Splane has extensive board governance expertise in the financial services and insurance industries. He served as chair for the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) for 10 years following his role as President and Managing Director with the organization. He was the founding president of the Bank of Alberta, which became the Canadian Western Bank where he was also the first president. Among the many boards he has been active on, Mr. Splane served as chair for the Alberta Municipal Financing Corporation (now Alberta Capital Finance Authority) and the Credit Union Deposit Guarantee Corporation, and he served on the board of directors for the Equitable Life Insurance Company. He has been an executive council member with the Canadian Bankers Association and director of the Arbitrators Institute of Canada Foundation as well as a member of the Prince Rupert Port Authority. Mr. Splane was also Assistant Deputy Provincial Treasurer in Alberta. His community involvement includes serving as campaign chair for the United Way of Edmonton and Area.

Wayne Wagner (Edmonton) is the former President of Lehigh Inland Cement Limited and worked for the company for more than 38 years. With extensive experience in the industry, Wayne served as a board member for the Cement Association of Canada and the Portland Cement Association. He also sat on the board of the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation. Wayne has participated in community efforts as Director and board member for the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce and the Edmonton YMCA, respectively.
