Students First Plan:
Frequently Asked Questions
You
have questions?
We have answers about the ATB Students First Plan:
- Am I eligible?
To qualify for ATB's Students First Plan, the following criteria must
be met:
- You must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant.
- You must be attending a full-time, classroom program (minimum 1 year
in length) at a Canadian, not-for-profit University, College or Technical
School (ie. Private vocational schools are not eligible).
- You must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible to apply for a Students
First MasterCard.
- Do I need to show my school student card?
For new accounts, you will be required to provide a copy of your payment of tuition receipt within 60 days of opening your account.
For established accounts, you will be required to provide a proof of tuition payment or a completed Confirmation of Enrolment form (PDF - 89k) before September 30 of the new school year in order to maintain your Students First Plan.
- How much can I borrow on the Students First Line of Credit?
Full-time undergraduates can borrow up to $10,000 (O.A.C.)
for each academic year up to a maximum of $40,000.
Enjoy a low interest
rate of Prime + 1%.
- What if I don't qualify for the Students First Line of Credit?
If you are unable to meet the qualification requirements for the
line of credit, we would require a co-signor before funds could
be advanced.
A co-signor is someone who takes financial responsibility for your loans
if you are unable to repay them.
- How much income do I need to qualify for a Students First MasterCard?
No minimum annual income is required which makes it easier to qualify.
- What will my payments be?
With ATB's Students First Line of Credit, you only
pay the monthly interest owing on the portion used while attending
school.
For example, if you use the full $10,000, and the prime rate is
6.0%, you pay only $50.00 per month (based on a 30 day month)*.
With ATB's Students First MasterCard, your minimum monthly payment is
only 3% of your outstanding balance. That's like $12 per month on a $400
balance*.
* Actual payments may vary
- What are Interac ABMs?
Interac ABMs all display the Interac logo. These would include ABMs
at the Royal Bank, CIBC, Toronto Dominion, Bank of Montreal, among
others
With your Students First Account, there is no charge for the first 5
Interac ABM transactions every month. This represents a $7.50 savings to
you. After the first 5 free transactions, you are charged $1.50 per Interac
ABM transaction. There is no charge for use of ATB or Alberta Regional
Network (ARN) ABMs.
- What happens when I graduate?
When you graduate from school, you continue to pay only monthly interest
on your Students First Line of Credit for up to 12 months prior
to establishing a repayment schedule. Once you secure employment,
or at
the end of the 12 month grace period, a repayment schedule will
be established. You can take up to 20 years to fully repay your
outstanding
balance.
Your Students First Account may be maintained for up to 12 months
after graduation. Upon graduation, talk to your Customer Service
Representative. They will be pleased to outline your available options.
- What happens if I don't finish school?
If you no longer meet the Students First Plan eligibility requirements,
contact your branch to discuss your options.
