Margot's story highlights why new Cardiac Hybrid Operating Room will make such a big difference in Southern Alberta.

One night in early 2012, Margot Kitchen experienced extreme chest pains. Her family called 911.

That night, Margot discovered she had a dissected aorta, and, over the following months, she would undergo multiple invasive procedures, experience post-surgical complications, and spend a month in the hospital fighting for her life. It was a scary and painful experience for Margot and her family.

Half of all Albertans will require cardiac care or cardiac diagnostic imaging during their lifetime, like Margot did in 2012. Their chances of survival and the quality of their care are dependent on facilities where world-class medical professionals collaborate closely to solve complex emergencies.

In 2014, treatment for these emergencies will change forever thanks to the opening of southern Alberta's first Cardiac Hybrid Operating Room at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. This state-of-the-art facility is an achievement for Calgary Health Trust, the Cardiac Sciences Team at the Foothills Medical Centre, and the countless donors who have fundraised for the project.

The new Cardiac Hybrid Operating Room will give surgeons and cardiologists the resources to work closely together to improve access and quality of care, significantly decreasing the number of invasive surgeries required by patients. The facility allows for high-quality imaging equipment with enough space for multi-disciplinary teams comprised of up to 18 clinicians at a time. The end result will be fewer risks associated with complications during surgery.

At ATB, we invest in causes that help Albertans live long and happy lives. We are extremely proud to support this critical operating room so that we hear fewer stories like Margot's and more stories of efficient surgeries and quick recoveries.
