Celebrating learning

Posted on: September 09, 2014 | Author: Jennifer Sharpe

Not only is continuous learning supported financially and philosophically, but it is actually required. We have invested in vast learning resources from a Skillport portal in which team members can access free books, videos, courses, certification programs, and more, to our in-house Masterful Leadership program which has been described as challenging, interactive, and life-changing.

And other learning experts are starting to notice.

The Canadian Society for Training and Development (CSTD) has named two ATB team members as recipients of the 2014 Learning Leader Award.

We’ve asked them about their current learning habits:

Curtis Stange, Chief Strategy and Operations Officer

What publications do you subscribe to?
PYMNTS.com, WP Editor, Oxford Business Group, and follow others on LinkedIn and Twitter.

Who is one of your favourite thought-leaders?
Simon Sinek because he has us think about the “why” we do things versus the what.

What books have you read recently?
Bank 3.0 by Brett King, Strategy is Destiny by Robert Burgelman, and way too many text books from Stanford.

What is the best seminar you’ve attended this year?
The Stanford Executive Program, a 6 week executive learning program. Roger St Jean, Manager Retail Loans

What publications do you subscribe to?
MacLean’s, Canadian Business, National Geo, and The Toastmaster Magazine.

Who is one of your favourite thought-leaders?
Many years ago, I discovered Zig Ziglar and have been a fan of his motivational materials. He’s old school these days, but it’s great to reflect on his articles. Zig always spoke to our personal success and belief in ourselves. He also focused on the balance of life and always maintained a spiritual connection. Our own Chief People Officer at ATB, Lorne Rubis, has very thought-provoking articles via his weekly blog.

What books have you read recently?
Business: The 5 Levels of Leadership by John Maxwell, The Three Levels of Leadership by James Scouller Historical Fiction: The White Princess by Philippa Gregory And starting the day with daily comics to get a chuckle and a reminder to accept life’s ups and downs.

What is the best seminar you’ve attended this year?
ATB’s Masterful Leadership program, in particular the capstone run by the team at “The Natural Leader” in Calgary, has been an amazing experience and very much exceeded my expectations. Also, as an avid (but rookie) Toastmaster, Toastmaster meetings have shown me the incredible growth and learning that is possible when you believe in yourself and have the right environment in which to learn.
