Puppet theatre director recognized for inspiring art

When you think of healing, what comes to mind? Medicine, meditation, a good night’s sleep? What about puppets?

“Puppetry arts can be a thought provoking experience, a voice, a creative platform, a community builder and a transformative power,” says Wendy Passmore-Godfrey, Artistic and Founding Director of WP Puppet Theatre.

Wendy is a lifelong artist and puppet theatre performer. In 2015, she collaborated with a great team to create the workshop, View From the Inside: Courage Journey. The program serves seniors and at-risk youth and tasks them with creating masks that reflect their inner and outer selves.

The goal is to de-stigmatize mental health and promote connection, understanding, empathy and openness. And it’s working.

“I’m thrilled when I think my art has inspired an audience member or a workshop participant—when I’ve caused a rethink, a joyous wonder, an imaginative flight of fancy, or a self-realization,” says Wendy.

Wendy’s artform resonates. The View program has earned her powerful testimonials from workshop participants and the 2018 ATB Financial Healing Through the Arts Award, presented today at the Mayor’s Lunch for Arts Champions in Calgary. The award recognizes those who harness the healing power of art to help others.

“I am proud and humbled to receive acknowledgement of the healing value of our program,” says Wendy. “This award will allow us to continue to offer the View program to Calgary organizations where it can make a difference.”
