Alberta leads the way among all provinces when it comes to household incomes according to new data just released from the 2016 Census.

Alberta had the highest household median income among the provinces in 2015 ($93,835). But, when measured against all provinces and territories, Alberta fell to third from second place in 2005. Still, the median income in Alberta was approximately $30,000 more than the national average and almost $20,000 more than the second highest province, Saskatchewan.

Within Alberta, median total income rose the fastest in Wood Buffalo (35.2 per cent), followed by Camrose (+29.9 per cent), Wetaskiwin (+27.3 per cent), Okotoks (+27.0 per cent), Edmonton (+26.6 per cent), Cold Lake (+23.0 per cent) and Calgary (+22.7 per cent). Meanwhile, Sylvan Lake had the slowest growth in median incomes of any Alberta metropolitan area (+7.8 per cent), it had the second-largest increase in the number of households (+50.5 per cent).

Higher incomes also translated to higher growth in the number of private households. Last year, private households in the province grew 21.6 per cent. The next highest was British Columbia at 14.5 per cent and the national average was 13.1 per cent.

There’s no denying that the last two years of recession have hurt many Albertans. It’s also true that many in the province are still without employment or are finding it difficult adapting to the new employment conditions. But as the Census stats show, Albertans, for the most part, are still doing quite well and that’s good for attracting other Canadians from other provinces, for housing and all forms of retail.
