A new and convenient way for seniors to pay their property taxes, courtesy of the Government of Alberta.
Low-interest home equity loan is available to Alberta homeowners who are 65+.
The Seniors Property Tax Deferral program allows senior homeowners to defer all or part of their property taxes through a low-interest home equity loan with the Government of Alberta.
The Government of Alberta will pay the property taxes to the municipality on behalf of the senior, and the senior will repay the loan, with interest, when they sell their home, are no longer eligible for the loan, or sooner if they choose.
The Seniors Property Tax Deferral program is 100 per cent voluntary, so it’s up to you whether you want to apply.
To quality, you must:
- Be 65 years old or older.
- Be an Alberta resident.
- Own a residential property in Alberta.
- Have a minimum of 25 per cent equity in your home.
How to apply:
Download an application here, or call the Alberta Supports Contact Centre at 1-877-644-9992 (in the Edmonton area: 780-644-9992).
How ATB is involved:
The Government of Alberta funds the Seniors Property Tax Deferral program and is responsible for all application approvals and program management. ATB Financial is the financial institution selected to help facilitate the program, handling all the loan account maintenance and financial advice for program participants on behalf of the Government of Alberta.
If you sign up for the Seniors Property Tax Deferral program, you will not be borrowing money from ATB Financial, but you can use any ATB branch to make your loan repayments (if you choose to do so).
