ATB opens a dedicated branch to support the arts

Posted on: February 27, 2018

Edmonton— ATB Financial has opened the doors at a new location with a unique purpose—to serve the arts community. The Branch for Arts & Culture is located inside the historic CKUA building in downtown Edmonton.

The Branch will cater to artists, businesses and non-profits working in Alberta's creative industries. Dave Mowat, ATB’s President & CEO believes they’ve been underserved.

“We hear feedback from the arts community that they are not taken seriously by banks. With irregular paycheques and inconsistent cash flow, many artists fail to qualify for credit. At the same time, they are working hard, contributing to Alberta in so many ways. We want to use our expertise and resources to help them continue,” he said.

The Jasper Avenue location doesn’t feel like a traditional bank. It will host art exhibits and can serve as a performance venue for a small crowd. The relaxed atmosphere will encourage people to come in and ask the financial questions they may not have the courage to ask elsewhere.

Ben Spencer, ATB’s Initiative Director for The Branch, understands the challenges artists face, because he is a musician himself.

“I was never viewed as an entrepreneur, even though that’s how I saw myself,” he said. “Now I’m in a position to alleviate some of these challenges for a community I feel so connected to.”

Spencer understands how the combination of industry knowledge and banking expertise at The Branch will make a difference to an estimated 75,000 Albertans who make up our creative community.

Clients can also get expert guidance with health benefits, financial literacy, career development and gap financing—when grant money is coming...but not quite yet.

The arts community in Calgary can access the same support and expertise at ATB’s Stephen Avenue location.
