Howdy partner!

Posted on: October 14, 2015 | Author: ATB Business & Agriculture

Finding the right business partner is definitely a key to success. You'll want someone you have a great rapport with—someone who has your back. We asked Paul Brassard and Mark Nolan, co-owners of Calgary’s Deville Coffee for their insight into what makes a good partnership.

“Some people are good at one aspect of the business and some people are better at another aspect and I think that’s where Paul and I really gel,” said Mark.

"We have different strengths and together we put together a great product.”

Paul and Mark set up shop in 2008 and now run two locations of their boutique café. Each day they serve up handmade coffee and espresso, fresh baked pastries and chef-inspired sandwiches, soups and salads. Calgarians are getting used to seeing their truck on the streets and at special events as well. The vintage Citroen delivery van is hard to miss.

“The van is so ugly that it’s beautiful,” laughs Paul.

“It is awesome...it’s sick, we love it.”

There will always be bumps in the road, but a good partner will help smooth them out. Here are a few qualities to look for in a partner:

  • Someone who will have your back, no matter what.
  • The yin to your yang. Someone with a skill set to complement your own.
  • A person you'll want to celebrate the good times with, and who’ll help pick you up in the bad times.
  • Someone you agree with, but aren’t afraid to disagree with.

Having the right banker as a partner for your business is equally important. Paul and Mark chose theirs with many of those same attributes in mind. And they like what they found in their ATB relationship manager. So much so that they've both got him on speed dial.
