Celebrating Earth Day at ATB

Making environmentally-friendly decisions is an ongoing goal at ATB, but this week, we are stepping up our green initiatives to coincide with Earth Day on Sunday, April 22.

Here's a quick look at what's happening in branches and at our corporate offices:

  • Incorporating Bullfrog Power

Bullfrog Power is Canada's 100% green energy provider. It works like this: after signing up with Bullfrog and committing to a certain amount of energy (or cost) to their program, their generators will inject the equivalent amount of 100% green electricity (like wind power) or green natural gas into your provincial energy system, effectively offsetting your conventional energy usage.

At ATB, we've converted all our ABMs (Automatic Banking Machines) to Bullfrog Power, and during Earth Week, our corporate head office in downtown Edmonton will run off this same green energy.

  • Using less paper

    Did you know?

It takes 788 trees and a swimming pool's worth of water to produce 43.5 tons of 30% recycled paper.

The Environmental Paper Network's paper calculator can help you figure out the environmental impact of your home or business paper use.

At ATB, we use 43 million sheets of copier paper per year—that's 43.5 tons of paper, enough to cover 475 football fields. It's a lot, and we want to use less.

To make that happen, we've created a staff contest called The Great Paper Chase to encourage our fellow ATBers to cut their paper consumption. We'll also continue to use only environmentally friendly paper (FSC Certified and SFI Certified), promote the use of recycled paper (30–100% recycled), and to recycle all our used paper through our secure shredding service.

  • Travelling green

On Wednesday, April 18, ATB head office associates are encouraged to carpool, take transit, bike, or walk to work. Other green initiatives are happening in branches and offices across the province.

  • Reporting our results

ATB is committed to providing yearly reports on our environmental efforts, including reducing our carbon footprint. Last year's report is available on our Corporate Social Responsibility page.

Earth Day is a great day to think and act green, but it's your decisions throughout the year that make a real difference to Alberta's environmental health. If you have any green tips for home or business, feel free to share them with us on our Facebook page.
