12 ATB clients among Alberta's fastest growing companies

Alberta is home to six of Canada’s top 10 entrepreneurial cities (CFIB), and this passion for business is apparent across the province, from home offices in Cold Lake to head offices in Calgary. Success doesn’t come easy—but when it does, it’s worth celebrating.

Every January, Alberta Venture releases a list of Alberta’s 50 fastest growing companies, and this year, ATB Financial is proud to have 12 clients on the list. One company, Rocking Horse Energy Services, ranked number two in the province—an accomplishment even president Steve Marshman was surprised by.

“It’s neat to see—we didn’t expect to rank as highly as we did,” he said. “Our VPs, Greg and Curtis Evans, deserve a lot of the credit for this. We couldn’t have done it without them.”

Based in Strathmore, Rocking Horse provides coring, drill rig, environmental, and transportation services to the oil and gas sector. Born and raised in the area, Marshman has been an ATB customer since childhood and values the relationship he’s built with Account Manager Sue Schmidt.

“Working with ATB has been really good,” Marshman said. “They helped us acquire property and a new building last year, and we get along really well with Sue. She’s awesome.”

Blacktop Paving is another ATB client on the list. Based in Edmonton, Blacktop is becoming a major player in the asphalt and concrete industry, posting 38 per cent annualized revenue growth over the past three years.

“It’s definitely an honour, but it didn’t really sink in until family members and other people in the industry started calling and congratulating us,” Scott Mitchell said. “We had known we were doing well the last couple of years, but it’s nice to see it in the magazine.”

For some ATB clients, the Fast Growth 50 honour isn’t a new one. Lift Interactive has been on the list for the past three years, 3C Information Solutions for the past four, and Rocky Mountain Soap Company has been one of Alberta’s fastest growing companies for an impressive six straight years.

I have the chance to hear some of the most amazing entrepreneurial stories and success stories in this province. It has been a constant inspiration to me, as an entrepreneur as well.”

Ruth Kelly, Alberta Venture

As the owners of these companies will attest, there’s little time to celebrate your accomplishments when you’re running a business, but on February 21, the Fast 50 owners and special guests packed the Art Gallery of Alberta for the keynote address, awards presentation, and reception. Guest speaker Bruce Poon Tip, one of Canada’s Top 10 Canadian Entrepreneurs of the last 25 years according to Profit magazine, started the event with an enlightening and inspiring presentation and Q&A.

Having so many high-achieving entrepreneurs in one room is rare, and Ruth Kelly, publisher and editor-in-chief of Alberta Venture, was thrilled by the turnout.

“I think it’s one of the blessings about owning Venture Publishing and publishing Alberta Venture magazine: I have the chance to hear some of the most amazing entrepreneurial stories and success stories in this province,” she said. “It has been a constant inspiration to me, as an entrepreneur as well.”

Kelly also values the services ATB provides to Alberta’s business owners. “ATB Financial bought the very first ad in Alberta Venture when I started the company, so I’ve always had a deep, deep affection for ATB,” she said. “I think that having a source of stable, relevant financial opportunities, as well as having local decision makers who understand the environment and the ramifications of this economy, is just vital to Alberta’s businesses.”

The Alberta Venture Fast Growth 50 ranking is determined by growth in revenue, assets, net earnings, and employees over a three-year period. You can view the complete list on
