Alberta is home to almost one fifth of Canada’s top 800 businesses, according to the latest annual ranking by Financial Post Magazine. The publication ranks the country’s top businesses by revenue, including public firms, private companies, subsidiaries and Crown corporations.
Alberta’s 18.3 per cent share is higher than its 11.6 per cent share of the national population. Ontario is home to the largest number of head offices in the country at 347. This represents 43.4 per cent of Canada’s 800 largest businesses compared to 38.6 per cent of the national population.
Head offices generate jobs, philanthropy, and ancillary economic activity such as airport traffic, business events, and accounting and legal services. The 146 businesses headquartered in Alberta were responsible for a total of $386.4 billion in revenue last year. This represents 16.4 per cent of the $2.4 trillion generated by all 800 businesses on the list.
Calgary is home to 118 of the largest businesses in the province (80.8 per cent) compared to 23 in the Edmonton region (15.8 per cent), and 5 (3.4 per cent) outside the two cities. Those businesses are located in Lacombe, Lloydminster, Medicine Hat, Okotoks, and Vegreville.
With more than 70 per cent of Calgary's top businesses operating in the energy or oil field services sector, the number of people working in the office towers has plummeted in recent years as companies cut staff to weather difficult economic conditions.
