Lost wallet checklist

Your wallet or purse is gone. Whether it’s been lost or stolen you need to act quickly to protect yourself from fraud or identity theft.

  • You’re going to be making many calls. Start a log to document who you talk to along with the date, time and outcome.

  • Call your credit card providers to report that your cards are lost or stolen.

  • If you cancel a credit card, make a list of your automatic payments. You will need to set those up again with your new credit card number once you get it.

  • Call or visit your bank. They can cancel your debit card and advise what to do next. In some cases it may make sense to close and reopen your accounts.

  • Keep an eye on your accounts via online banking and if you see any transactions not made by you, report them to your bank or credit card company right away.

  • If you had your credit or debit card in a mobile wallet (such as Apple Pay or Android Pay) remove cancelled cards so you do not inadvertently try to use them.
    Debit cards: add your new card once you receive it
    Credit cards: ATB Client Care can update your credit card in the mobile wallet immediately (even before you have received the physical card).

  • Call Canadian credit bureaus to report that your ID has been lost or stolen.

  • Visit an Alberta Registry to report a lost or stolen driver’s licence and to apply for a replacement. They can help with replacing your Alberta Personal Health card too.

  • Report a lost or stolen Social Insurance Card to Service Canada.

  • Consider reporting your loss to police. In the case of theft this is a must, but it might even make sense if you lost your wallet. A police report could help you recover from identity theft and if the item turns up, it can be returned to you.

  • Always report identity theft and fraud. Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

  • Consider signing up for Credit Alert. It’s a service that alerts you to new activity on your credit history. There is a fee, but it might be worth it, especially if you think you are a victim of theft.
