Albertans enjoy a wide range of tourist attractions

According to Travel Alberta, tourism spending in the province is split about 60-20-20. Albertans travelling within our province account for 60 per cent of the spending; Canadians travelling to Alberta account for 20 per cent, and Americans and other international travellers account for the remaining 20 per cent. In other words, travel within Alberta by Albertans is the largest source of tourism revenue.

To get a better sense of what Albertans like to do while at home we asked ATB customers to tell us what events and attractions they are planning to partake in over the next 12 months. (It’s not a perfect proxy, but a survey of ATB’s over 750,000 customers should provide a pretty good indication of how Albertans in general would respond.)

The most popular attraction is Alberta’s natural beauty and recreation options with 74 per cent of respondents saying they would visit a natural attraction such as the mountains or one of our incredible parks. Second on the list is live music with 46 per cent saying that they would attend a music festival, go to a concert or catch a band at a pub.

While less popular than natural attractions and live music, one in four are planning to hit up a cultural festival and one in five will check out a comedy show.

What these results show is that Albertans are interested in a wide range of tourist attractions. Some categories are clearly more popular (e.g. more people are planning to stop by a zoo than a literary event), but even the ones at the bottom of the list are of interest to tens of thousands of Albertans.
