The possibility of a “no deal” Brexit has The Owl taking a look at Alberta’s exports to the United Kingdom.

According to Trade Data Online, the United Kingdom purchased about $244 million of goods from Alberta in 2018. This represents 0.2 per cent of our total international exports. Our top three exports to the U.K. last year were wheat (19 per cent), crude oil (16 per cent) and uranium (5 per cent).

Grouped together, manufactured products accounted for 59 per cent of our total sales to the U.K. Key exports in this category include aluminum containers for compressed or liquefied gas, cuts of beef, concrete mix, turbines, pet food and plastic.

How Brexit might affect Alberta’s trade with the U.K. is unclear. Canada would need to negotiate a new trade agreement with the U.K., since it would no longer be part of Canada’s trade arrangements with the European Union.
