You can buy just about anything online these days and with faster internet connections and one-click shopping, the Internet is becoming a more prominent place for us to spend our money. But, as The Owl explores today, where people make those online purchases depends largely on age—unless we're talking books.

Across all the age groups, online book stores were the most popular place to spend money online in the last year. According to data from Numeris, a polling firm that focuses on consumer behaviour and media consumption, the share of people who made a purchase on Amazon was virtually equal between the groups aged 25 to 34 (50 per cent) and 35 to 44 (51 per cent). In Edmonton, 42 per cent of people aged 35 to 44 made a purchase on Amazon or a similar site in the last year. This was the highest among all age groups in this category.

In both Calgary and Edmonton, online travel spending was spread evenly among the groups aged 25 to 34, 35 to 44 and 45 to 54. It was more popular among older Albertans. This isn’t entirely surprising given their likelihood for higher incomes and proximity to retirement. In Calgary, 25 per cent of people aged 55 to 64 booked travel from a travel website or directly from an airline. The number was around the same in Edmonton.

Online gaming, music and movies had the largest share of purchasers in Edmonton's 18 to 24 (29 per cent) category. In Calgary, the share of spenders in this category was evenly distributed between the 18 to 24 and 35 to 44 age groups (31 per cent).

Younger Albertans are the most likely to buy their newest kicks online. In Calgary, 30 per cent of people aged 18 to 24 bought clothes online. The number was slightly lower in Edmonton, at 23 per cent.
