Alberta cannabis consumption some of the highest in Canada

In 2017, five million Canadians aged 15 to 64 spent close to $6-billion on cannabis for medical and non-medical purposes. This works out to around $1,200 per consumer. Of course, consumption varies across the provinces. In Alberta, consumption of cannabis is some of the highest in the country.

Statistics Canada reports that the highest per capita usage was in Nova Scotia at 27.1 grams per person per year. British Columbia was second at 24.6 grams per capita and Alberta was not far off at 24.1 grams. Saskatchewan, along with the three territories, were the regions with the lowest per capita consumption.

When measured in dollars spent per person per year, Alberta ranked second in dollars spent per capita on cannabis ($181 per person per year). Nova Scotia had the highest spending per person per year ($204) in 2017. Cannabis prices in Alberta and Nova Scotia were slightly higher than the national average ($7.25 per gram) last year, however; the higher dollars spent in the two provinces were the result of higher usage and not pricing. Quebec had the lowest spending levels in Canada, reflective of the lower prices ($6.19 per gram) in that province.

This summer, cannabis is likely to be legalized. With these statistics provided by Statistics Canada, it’s apparent that the legalization of cannabis will also bring economic opportunities. For example, in 2014, the value added by the cannabis industry in British Columbia was $2.7 billion, this number was about three times larger than the province’s greenhouse industry and continues to grow. In Quebec, it’s estimated that in 2014, the cannabis industry was slightly larger than the province’s forestry and logging industry. With significant value being added to the national and provincial economies, it’s no wonder why cannabis projects continue to pop up around Alberta.
