Alberta may export a surplus of goods to the rest of Canada, but the reverse is true when it comes to what it imports. According to Statistics Canada, Alberta's imports of services accounted for 60.3 per cent of what the province purchased from other parts of the country in 2014. Alberta's exports of goods, on the other hand, amounted to 54.8 per cent of total domestic exports.

Alberta’s main interprovincial exports are mineral fuels (oil, natural gas and coal) and refined petroleum products, such as gasoline, diesel and asphalt. Combined, these two categories accounted for 35.9 per cent of Alberta’s domestic exports in 2014, the most recent year for which detailed statistics are available.

Ontario is the destination of nearly half (48 per cent) of Alberta’s mineral fuel/petroleum product exports followed by British Columbia (17.3 per cent) and Saskatchewan (15 per cent).

Other finance and insurance services such as investment services, life insurance and auto insurance is the single largest category of imports into Alberta from the rest of the country, amounting to 12 per cent of total imports. This is followed by wholesale services (10.8 per cent), professional services (7.8 per cent) and transportation services (7.8 per cent).

In the same year, Alberta sold $5.4 billion worth of food and non-alcoholic beverages to other parts of Canada and purchased $5.6 billion in return.
