Alberta seeing fewer EI claimants

Alberta seeing fewer EI claimants

Posted on: 5/25/2018 | Author: ATB Financial's Economics + Research Team

Alberta recorded the fastest year-over-year decline in employment insurance beneficiaries of all the provinces in March. Compared to the same month last year, the number of recipients has fallen 26.4 per cent.

The number of Albertan beneficiaries has been on the decline for five consecutive months and March was no different. That month saw a two per cent drop in claims over February, representing 1,480 people. According to Statistics Canada, the decline was felt strongest in Alberta’s cities, where the number of recipients fell by close to five per cent.

The significant drop in employment insurance claims is due to the economic recovery taking place in Alberta and the effects of a strengthening labour market. There were 8,300 jobs added to Alberta’s economy in March.

Despite the fact that Alberta’s labour market continues to recover from the 2015-16 recession and more Albertans continue to find work, the overall unemployment rate will likely stay higher than the province is accustomed to for the next couple of years. That could begin to cause a leveling off of EI claims in the coming months.
