Albertans second highest spenders in the country at restaurant and bars

With the warm summer-like weather lately, restaurant patios across the province have been packed. Restaurateurs and pub owners are welcoming patrons back after what has been a tough few years. With fewer dollars to spend on discretionary pleasures like eating out, many Albertans had been going out less.

Still, Albertans spend more per person than Canadians in almost any other province. Between April of last year and March of this year, restaurants and bars racked up sales of $9.3 billion dollars. That amounts to $2,149 dollars per person.

The Canadian average is $1,877 per person over the last year. The province with the lowest per capita spending is Manitoba at $1,510 per person. British Columbia is way out in front of every other province at $2,379, likely on account of the high level of tourism in that province.

The fact that Albertans spend so much money eating out could be partially due to higher food prices. Prices on menus in the province have risen 3.3 per cent year-over-year, a full percentage point higher than Alberta’s overall inflation rate. Higher menu prices are the result of rising operating costs for restaurant and bar owners.

Regardless of the higher prices on menus, Albertans appear willing to pay more. Over the last 12 months, total receipts at restaurants and bars are up 3.8 per cent compared to the previous 12 month period.
