According to new population estimates released by Statistics Canada, Alberta’s population grew by 63,115 between 2017 and 2018. That’s an increase of 1.5 per cent, the third highest rate among the provinces.

The top two provinces, Ontario and Prince Edward Island, were tied at 1.8 per cent. In absolute terms, Ontario added 251,312 people while PEI added 2,678. Newfoundland and Labrador was the only province to shrink, posting a loss of 3,212 (-0.6 per cent).

Net international migration accounted for 49.3 per cent of Alberta’s total population growth last year. This was followed closely by natural increase (births less deaths) at 48.4 per cent. Although it is back in positive territory, net migration from other parts of Canada contributed just 1,438 people to the province’s growth in 2018 (2.3 per cent of the total).

Alberta’s population is younger than that of other provinces, with a median age of 36.9 years in 2018 compared to 41.8 in the country as a whole. Nonetheless, our population is growing older. The number of Albertans age 65 and over increased by 48 per cent over the last 10 years compared to a jump of 15.8 per cent for those age 18 to 64, and 18.8 per cent for those age under 17.

The pace of population growth in Alberta slowed in the wake of the recession, from an annual average of 2.1 per cent from 2010 to 2014, to 1.3 per cent from 2015 to 2018. Even so, the province's population growth remains positive and, therefore, continues to stimulate economic growth.
