International migration to Alberta

Posted on: 4/11/2019 | Author: ATB Financial's Economics + Research Team

Alberta’s economic advantages are often a key determinant for people who choose to make the province their new home when moving from abroad. As such, Alberta attracted close to 12 per cent of the 2.8 million net international migrants to all of Canada from 2009 to 2018.

If we strip out people coming and going on a short-term basis, such as students and temporary foreign workers, we find that the inflow from other countries to Alberta is about 5.4 times the outflow.

Over the last decade, 436,766 people moved to Alberta from abroad (either as new immigrants or returning emigrants) while 81,078 left for international destinations. This yields a net gain of 355,688 permanent residents or about 36,000 people per year.

About 88 per cent of those who moved to Alberta from another country were immigrants rather than people returning after an extended stay abroad.
