Job growth in Alberta by industry

​​Friday’s Owl detailed how overall job creation in Alberta has been slow so far this year. Monthly employment growth has averaged just 0.01 per cent over the first eight months of the year

Looking at job growth among the 16 major sectors, some have seen jobs added while others have seen them disappear. Comparing the average number of jobs in 2018 to the average for the first eight months of this year, nine of the sectors have seen job losses while seven have seen gains.

Public administration saw the largest increase in jobs at 6.7 per cent followed by manufacturing at 4.9 per cent. The “other services” category, which includes everyone from gardeners and nannies to auto mechanics and funeral directors, grew by 4.5 per cent. The health care and social assistance sector increased by 3.7 per cent.

Sectors that lost jobs include information, culture and recreation (-4.0 per cent), construction (-3.2 per cent), forestry, mining and oil and gas (-3.0 per cent), and accommodation and food services (-2.6 per cent).

The number of jobs in the goods-producing sector fell by 1.2 per cent while the services-producing sector increased by 1.0 per cent.
