Jobs decline for the second straight month

Jobs decline for the second straight month

Alberta’s journey towards economic recovery saw another bump in the road last month. Total employment declined by about 2,700 jobs from September to October, bumping the provincial unemployment rate up 0.3 percentage points to 7.3 per cent.

At first glance, October’s job report looks troubling. But, digging deeper into the numbers shows Alberta’s employment situation isn’t all bad. The job losses in October were entirely part-time. Even though the province’s labour market saw a hefty loss of 11,300 part-time jobs, this number was partially offset by the addition of 8,600 full-time jobs.

The rise in the unemployment rate was driven higher by more people joining the labour force (+4,400). While an increase in the jobless rate is never good news, it does suggest people are either coming back to Alberta to look for work or simply returning to the labour market, both positive signs for the economy.

Over the past 12 months, Alberta’s job market has added 42,300 jobs. Job gains have been strongest in public administration (+11,900), health care and social assistance (+10,700), and information, culture and recreation (+6,500). Agriculture (-7,400), transportation and warehousing (-3,900), and finance, insurance, real estate rental, and leasing (-3,200) saw decreases over same time frame.

Even though Alberta has experienced two straight months of total jobs losses, there’s no denying the province has improved from where it was a year ago. Still, the pace of recovery likely remains challenging for the many Albertans seeking work.
