Jobs edge slightly higher in May

Alberta’s employment picture continues to improve, albeit at a rate many would still describe as frustratingly slow.

According to the latest Labour Force Survey, there were 2,900 new jobs created in Alberta last month. (This figure is adjusted to take into account regular seasonality in the job market.) It was a small increase from the previous month, and 1.6 per cent higher than total employment a year ago.

All of the jobs created were full-time positions (+3,200), which were only partially offset by a loss in part-time employment. This trend towards full-time work has been ongoing for much of the last year, suggesting that the jobs coming back are good quality positions.

Provincially, the unemployment rate fell from 6.7 per cent in April to 6.2 per cent in May. However, that’s due more to a drop in the size of the labour force than strong job creation. Calgary’s unemployment rate fell from 8.0 to 7.7 per cent, while Edmonton’s edged lower from 6.6 to 6.5 per cent. (Data for the cities is the three-month moving average, seasonally adjusted).

Alberta’s manufacturing and natural resource sectors continue to add jobs, up by 7.5 and 6.4 per cent respectively. This is encouraging as both of these sectors were hit hard by the recession two years ago. Jobs continue to fall, however, in finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing (-3.2 per cent) and transportation and warehousing (-1.8 per cent).
