Manufacturing improves to start the year

Following two consecutive monthly declines, Alberta's manufacturing shipments started 2019 on a stronger note. According to Statistics Canada, sales from Alberta factory floors reached $6.2 billion in January. The total was 2.5 per cent higher than December and 1.3 per cent higher than the same month last year.

Sales were up in 12 of 21 industries, but the largest gains occurred in the food manufacturing industry. Sales in this subsector experienced a 13.8 per cent rise in sales over the course of the month. Compared to last year, sales were 14.4 per cent higher.

Statistics Canada also notes sales were greater in the wood products, fabricated metal products and electrical equipment, appliance and component industries.

Manufacturing, specifically food manufacturing, will once again remain central to Alberta's economic growth this year. The production of vegetables, including potatoes, is likely to expand in 2019 and beyond as global demand for food continues. Investments in new food manufacturing facilities, like the Cavendish Farms processing plant in Lethbridge, will encourage more production and help bolster the province’s manufacturing sector.
