Manufacturing shipments reach highest level since 2014

After taking in a break in August, sales from Alberta’s factory floors started growing again in September, reaching their highest level since November 2014. The value of shipments from all manufacturers in Alberta was $6.7 billion (seasonally adjusted), representing nearly a 2 per cent increase from August. Sales are up 11 per cent from where they were a year ago.

Though the largest increases were in paper manufacturing (+8.5 per cent), stability in Alberta’s energy sector and higher production of petroleum products have largely driven growth in 2018. Shipments from petroleum and coal manufacturing were up 7.8 per cent.

It’s not just energy-related manufacturing that has been performing well over the last 12 months. Most manufacturing sub-categories are in line with, or above, last year’s levels.

The sales of manufactured goods in Alberta will perform strongly for the remainder of the year. This momentum is almost certain to flow into next year as Alberta’s economic recovery continues to bring certainty to the province’s export-related industries.
