Calgary’s new 240,000 square-foot Central Library is opening to the public today. With its $245 million price tag, the new library is a hefty investment for Calgary residents. That is, until you consider the long term social and economic payoffs.

Countries with high literacy and reading comprehension levels, like Canada, routinely rank among the best places to live in the world and have the most advanced economies. What’s more, high literacy rates and reading performance correspond with high standards of living and strong economic performance.

Public libraries are also a critical link in connecting the public to local art in all forms. By its very nature, the library sets out to support the artists who make their living creating in our own backyard.

Lastly, libraries give the general public cost-effective access to mountains of information, stories and concepts, absent of discrimination. Their vast array of information is shared regardless of race, income, class, age, and gender. This is vital to encouraging the flow of ideas and perspectives people may not have otherwise known.

Building a library is costly in the short run, but the investment comes with a great deal of opportunity for the future. A higher standard of living, supporting local artists and sharing information will foster ideas, many that will lead to further economic growth.
