Alberta’s job market continues to reflect a weak economy. After some improvement in June, employment in Alberta slipped by 0.6 per cent in July—the fourth monthly pullback since the start of the year.

The unemployment rate went from 6.6 per cent in June to 7.0 per cent in July with a total of 177,600 Albertans out of work and looking for a job.

The number of full-time jobs lost some ground in July (-1.5 per cent) while part-time positions increased by 3.9 per cent.

Things are little better year-over-year with the number of jobs up by 0.8 per cent compared to July 2018. Job creation, however, did not keep up with growth in the number of job seekers, falling short by 9,700 positions.

Nationally, the number of jobs barely budged while the unemployment rate rose from 5.5 per cent to 5.7 per cent.
