Wages up again in September

The fact that working Albertans had a little extra money in their pockets in September compared to August is another sign that the economic recovery is building momentum. Statistics released today show that the average weekly wage in Alberta jumped by 0.8 per cent between August and September. Wages were 2.3 per cent higher this September than they were last September. (Wage data are pre-tax, include overtime pay and are adjusted for seasonality.)

The average weekly wage in Alberta was $1,142 compared to $986 for the country as a whole. The average wage in Alberta remains the highest among the provinces.

These numbers are, of course, averages. Not everyone earns the average wage. The average weekly wage of workers in the oil and gas sector was $2,377, the highest among the sectors. An increase of 10,185 oil and gas workers this September compared to last helped drive up Alberta’s overall average wage.

Year-over-year, the real estate and rental and leasing sector saw the biggest jump in earnings at 18.5 per cent ($1,261 in September 2017 versus $1,064 in September 2016). There were also solid gains in accommodation and food services (+7.5 per cent), arts, entertainment and recreation (+7.6 per cent), and wholesale trade (+7.5 per cent).

Five sectors saw wages fall during the September-to-September time frame: administrative and support, waste management and remediation services (-7.4 per cent); forestry (-2.8 per cent); retail (-2.6 per cent); manufacturing (-2.2 per cent); and professional, scientific and technical services (-1.1 per cent).
