Alberta’s population growth Part Two: What’s contributing to our growing population?

In Part One of The Owl's look at population growth, we examined how Alberta continues to be among the fastest growing provinces in Canada. Compared to a year ago, we’ve grown by more than 63,000 people (+1.5 per cent).

What has contributed to this population growth? The graph below shows the percentage of new Albertans that came from one of three sources of growth.

The yellow segments of the bars represent natural population growth — that is, total births minus total deaths. This has remained consistent over the last five years, averaging around 8,000 new Albertans each quarter.

The red segments are net international migration, including temporary residents. Permanent immigration has been consistent around 11,000 new people each quarter, while emigration has averaged just over 2,000. However, the number of temporary residents has fluctuated with economic conditions, ranging from a positive net inflow of over 7,500 in 2013 to a net outflow of about the same amount in 2015. Temporary residents include international students and workers under the temporary foreign worker program.

The blue segments represent interprovincial migration. Before the recession, this had consistently brought in 5,000 to 10,000 net new people each quarter. Between 2015 and 2017, however, Alberta experienced a net outflow of migrants to other provinces. It has recently returned to slightly positive in 2018.
