Wholesale trade the highest it's ever been

Wholesale trade the highest it's ever been

In May, wholesale activity reported its fifth increase in the last six months and sales reached the highest level on record in Alberta. Wholesale trade can be a forgotten segment of the retail industry. However, since wholesalers sell products to businesses, institutions and governments, it plays an integral role in the province’s retail sector.

The total sales of products to businesses, institutions and governments, reached $7.3 billion in May. May’s total was up 6.6 per cent from April and 7.2 per cent from the same month a year earlier.

Sales were up in six subsectors and were led by the miscellaneous subsector (+26.7 per cent). This subsector includes recyclable materials, paper and disposable plastic products, and agricultural supplies. Broken down, the agricultural supplies industry within the miscellaneous subsector contributed the most to the gains.

Since wholesalers sell to other businesses, institutions and governments, the new record high proves the underlying strength of our province’s retail sector. It also shows that Albertans at large have faith in the future of our economy.
