Step aside pick-up trucks! You’re no longer the favourite type of vehicle in Alberta--although you still come pretty close.

Total new light vehicle sales in Alberta topped 244,300 units last year, according to a report from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants. That’s an increase of 11 per cent over 2016, further supporting the notion that consumer confidence in our province is improving. Still, it remains almost nine per cent below the record of 268,419 units in 2014.

Light vehicles include both cars and trucks, and the favourite among Alberta drivers last year was the sport utility vehicle, or SUV. With over 98,000 units sold, they now account for just over 40 per cent of new vehicle sales. Almost half of these are in the category of “compact sport utility” vehicle, more commonly known as the cross-over. It’s larger than a traditional car but smaller than a traditional SUV or truck.

Large and small-size pick-up trucks had for a long while been the best selling passenger vehicle in Alberta, but as a group pick-ups now fall into second place with 35 per cent of the market.

Cars, including compact, sub-compact, intermediate, luxury and sports cars now account for less than 19 per cent of the market. Vans and mini-vans, which enjoyed their day as the top-selling vehicle in the 1980s and 90s, now make up only 5.7 per cent of sales.
