Fed Governor Brainard in the spotlight

Posted on: September 12, 2016

The Canadian dollar remains on the weak side and all eyes and ears will be on Fed Governor Lael Brainard today as she speaks at the Chicago Council of Global Affairs on the outlook for the economy and monetary policy (11:15 mountain time).

This will be the final speaking event for a voting member of the FOMC before the blackout period (which starts tomorrow) ahead of the September 20-21 meeting (and rate announcement). Brainard, who is seen as one of the most dovish members of the Board of Governors, was a last-minute announcement to speak there, a fact which market participants believe will be a sign from the Fed (depending what she says, of course) that all members are on board for a December hike.

Outside of this, the market will be looking closely at Retail Sales number from the US on Thursday and PPI numbers of Friday. From Canada, there is very little economic data this week.

Good luck out there.
