Two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication (2FA) makes your online and mobile banking even safer.

All ATB clients must enrol in two-factor authentication. 2FA is an extra layer of security to keep your ATB accounts safe.

Why do I need 2FA?

It’s protection beyond passwords

Even if someone knows your username and password, 2FA checks if it’s really you by asking you to enter a one-time passcode, making it more difficult for someone to access your accounts or perform transactions without your authorization.

It’s an extra layer of defence

Enrolling in 2FA protects your accounts by requiring something you know (your username and password) and something you have (a passcode sent to your phone).

A few seconds that can prevent big fraud

When challenged, 2FA only adds a few extra seconds to the transaction process, while potentially saving you countless hours of effort and frustration that victims of fraud typically experience.

How it works

We’ll ask for a one-time passcode when needed, to ensure it’s you accessing your account. 2FA can get triggered by certain actions like logging in, moving money or changing settings.

When you receive this prompt:
  1. Confirm you’re ready to receive the one-time passcode via your preferred delivery method.
  2. Enter the 6-digit passcode within 3 minutes to continue logging in.

Frequently Asked Questions

2FA is an authentication system that fights fraud by creating an additional layer of security on your accounts.

Before you log in or complete certain online transactions, you might be asked to enter a one-time passcode. This passcode will be sent in one of two ways: via text message to your mobile phone or an automated voice message to your mobile or landline phone. It works as a second check to make sure it’s really you accessing your account.

2FA is free. At ATB, we’re dedicated to keeping your money, and your identity, safe. Your carrier’s standard messaging rates may apply if you choose to receive passcodes via text.

Try requesting another passcode via a link or button that says, "Resend Code". Make sure you have an adequate cell signal when you’re using the ATB Personal, ATB Business or ATB Prosper mobile apps.

If that doesn’t work, call our Client Care team at 1-800-332-8383.
