Embracing circularity: Powering impact through electronic recycling

How ATB is turning e-waste into social impact by diverting electronics from landfills and reinvesting rebates into local nonprofits

At ATB, we believe that contributing to a more sustainable future includes advancing a circular economy, one where products are reused, repaired or recycled rather than thrown away to eliminate waste and maximize the value of our resources for as long as possible. In addition to keeping materials in circulation and out of the landfill through the classic “reduce, reuse and recycle” principles, we ensure our environmental stewardship efforts provide opportunities to reinvest value back into the communities we serve.

According to the World Health Organization, electronic waste is currently the fastest-growing waste stream worldwide, fuelled by a rapid increase in electronics consumption globally. Recognizing this as an opportunity to contribute to the circular economy and be responsible environmental stewards, ATB hosted community e-waste recycling drives in partnership with the Alberta Recycling Management Association (ARMA) and eCycle Solutions.

After piloting our first e-cycle event at ATB’s Airdrie Main Street branch in honour of Earth Day 2025, we have since expanded our reach with two subsequent events hosted by branches in Calgary and Edmonton. Through these events, clients, the community and team members were able to properly dispose of household electronics—with an impressive 2,496 kilograms of electronic waste collected.

Through ARMA’s program, the total weight of the e-waste collected was translated into monetary funding, which the host branches donated to local nonprofits. This included the BGC Airdrie Club (formerly Airdrie Boys’ & Girls’ Club), the Women’s Centre of Calgary and the Edmonton Food Bank.

ATB’s approach to embracing circularity maximizes the value and impact we deliver to those we serve, ensuring that economic prosperity, environmental stewardship and community well-being are inextricably linked.
