According to the latest job numbers* from Statistics Canada, the gains in Alberta were modest, but in the right direction.

After adjusting for seasonal effects, the total number of jobs in the province rose by about 7,200 for a monthly increase of 0.3%.

The number of full-time positions went up by 15,700 (+0.8%) while part-time employment went down by 8,400 (-1.8%).

The national unemployment rate in March was 5.3% compared to 5.5% in February. In Alberta, the rate was 6.5% compared to 6.8% the month before.

Unlike the national unemployment rate which reached its lowest level since 1976 when the current data series began, Alberta’s unemployment rate was still double its record low set in October 2006.
