Restaurant and bar sales stumbled in September

Year-to-date sales were 16.2% below the same period in 2019

After finally rising above their pre-pandemic level in August, restaurant and bar sales in Alberta fell below it again in September.

With Alberta’s COVID-19 cases spiking and the public health emergency reinstated, the sector’s seasonally adjusted revenue fell by 4.8% ($13.3 million).

Monthly sales increased in 7 of the provinces while national revenue was flat.

Quebec, Ontario and Alberta were the only provinces with sales below where they were in February 2020 before the pandemic was declared.

On a year-to-date basis, sales in Alberta over the first 9 months of 2021 were 16.2% ($1.2 billion below the same period in 2019.
