"By dismantling barriers and fostering understanding, IslamicFamily is creating a ripple effect of healing."

Transforming lives through culturally sensitive therapy
Since 2012 IslamicFamily has fostered transformative change in Alberta. Initially focused on domestic violence survivors, the program broadened its scope over time, offering multilingual, culturally attuned counseling services.
ATB Community Foundation’s $20,000 contribution to IslamicFamily has been instrumental in the expansion of the program to build capacity and provide culturally sensitive counseling in various languages, directly impacting the lives of those IslamicFamily serves.
“Matching clients with counselors who understand their unique backgrounds is crucial,” says Mohamed Ayyash, counselling team lead with IslamicFamily. ATB’s support allows IslamicFamily to maintain this vital approach, especially for refugees, immigrants, and those facing trauma.
One client's journey exemplifies this impact. Referred for suicidal ideation and complex PTSD, he arrived at IslamicFamily in a state of profound isolation.
“Through culturally sensitive therapy, his life was transformed,” Mohammad recounts.
The client, who had previously been isolated and unable to connect with his family, is now thriving. He reached out to learn how he could give back to the community and has now volunteered at Edmonton’s Food Bank, and is attending school.
“His story underscores the power of culturally informed care and the essential role of resources, such as those provided by ATB, in addressing our community’s needs,” says Mohamed.
ATB champions mental health outcomes because we believe that strong, healthy communities are built on the well-being of each individual. This commitment aligns with our vision of a future where all Albertans experience mental well-being and feel empowered to actively participate in those communities.
