Financial empowerment
A case study

Kim is telling her story of financial empowerment

Kim’s story

Kim's dream of owning a home felt distant. But Kim's story isn't one of despair—it’s one of transformation, powered by United Way of the Alberta Capital Region’s Empower U program and fueled by the belief that financial well-being is within everyone's reach.
"She learned how to build a budget, understand her credit score, and set realistic goals. The matched savings component provided the extra push she needed to turn those goals into reality."

The power of Empower U

Kim's dream of home ownership was obscured by the weight of a low credit score and a nagging uncertainty about how finances even worked. Like many Albertans, she felt the pinch of rising costs.

Empower U isn't just a series of workshops—it's a lifeline. Through a 10- to 12-week curriculum, participants learn the essentials of personal finance, from budgeting and saving to navigating the complexities of credit and banking. They also receive one-on-one mentoring. And, crucially, they have the opportunity to participate in a matched savings program.

For Kim, Empower U was a game-changer. She remembers feeling lost and overwhelmed by her financial situation. She learned how to build a budget, understand her credit score, and set realistic goals. The matched savings component provided the extra push she needed to turn those goals into reality.

After six years of diligently working through the program and building her credit, Kim achieved her dream: she bought her first home. The pride in her voice is palpable as she recounts her journey, a journey that took her from financial uncertainty to homeownership.

And Kim is paying it forward. She's teaching her daughter about budgeting and saving, breaking the cycle of financial insecurity and empowering the next generation. This ripple effect is at the heart of ATB’s commitment to create lasting, generational change.

Creating financial empowerment like this is why ATB invests in programs like Empower U. Our $85,000 contribution this year, along with the dedication of our team members, is building on past successes like Kim's and helping over 230 people. This year’s commitment marks 14 years of our funding and banking partnership, supporting this program since its inception.

We also have 100 ATB ambassadors deeply involved in the success of Empower U clients. By providing mentorship and expert advice, we are guiding participants through the intricacies of the banking system and building relationships based on trust and support.
