How to Be Money Smart Getting Ready for the Calgary Stampede (Without Sacrificing Style)

By ATB Financial 27 June 2025 2 min read

Stampede season is one of the most exciting times of the year - but let’s be honest, it can also be one of the most expensive. Between planning the perfect outfits, buying all the concert tickets and unlimited things to do, it’s super easy to watch your budget disappear before the 10-days even start. As someone who loves all the fun that goes into getting fashion ready for Stampede, I’ve learned a few tricks to help me not over-spend during the weeks leading up to the big ol’ event.

💡 Pre-Stampede Money Smart Tips

 1. Re-use & Repurpose

While it might not seem like it, you don’t actually need a whole new Stampede wardrobe every year. Always make sure to go through your closet and see what pieces you can style differently. The trend cycle is always rotating, so something that may have been “out” last year, could be oh so “in” this year. Revisit what you already love and use websites like Pinterest to find inspiration and a new perspective on your closet.

2. Vintage & Secondhand Always

Secondhand shopping & thrifting are your best friends this time of year. Not only is it often more affordable, but it’s also a chance to find something unique that no one else will be wearing. Make it a priority to hit up vintage stores, secondhand apps/websites and charity shops whenever you can.

3. Budget First

Before you start shopping, take a moment to set a budget that actually feels comfortable for you. Lay down the law on what you’re willing to spend right away. This makes it so much easier to have concrete guidelines for your spending so you don’t go overboard.

4. Borrow & Share

Sharing is caring (and sustainable!). That “perfect” top you’ve been looking for? Yeah, the one you’ve been searching for on literally every website? Your bestie might already own it. Sharing pieces with your friends for the week can be a fun way to create new looks without spending a dime.

5. PLAN! Avoid Last-Minute Panic Buys

We’ve all been there. You’re supposed to meet your friends at the tents in two hours and have “nothing” to wear. So what do you do? You make a panic run to the mall & overspend. Don’t be this person this year. Planning your outfits ahead gives you time to find better prices and avoid those “I need something right now!” decisions that throw your budget off track.

6. No One Thinks About You as Much as You Think They Do

Repeat after me: “no one cares about my outfit as much as I do”. The weeks leading up to Stampede can feel like a high-stakes, high pressure situation when it comes to having the best style. Just remember your financial well-being is top priority, and creating the perfect look is not worth sacrificing that.

Whether you're hitting the rodeo, two-stepping at the tents or just here for whatever you can find, Stampede should be about having fun - not financial stress. Try using tools like ATB’s budgeting worksheet or savings roadmap to categorize & organize your spending as you go. With just a little bit of extra prep and a smart mindset, you can enjoy everything that is the Calgary Stampede and still feel good about your spending. 🤠💖
