The life of a fan girl: Budgeting and the value of fandom

Swiftie superfan Amy Bergstrom reveals how to save smart and still enjoy every show.

Looking back on recent years, few cultural moments have been as epic as the tour that took over the world. Swifties united in sold-out stadiums across the globe to celebrate their favourite pop superstar. And between tickets, flights, hotels and merchandise, the experience was a significant financial investment for many of them.

It left us wondering: what’s the real price of being a fan? Is it always a love story, or can the cost of supporting a beloved artist leave fans wishing they could just shake it off?

Having been to four concerts during the recent tour, Amy Bergstrom (@amybergstrom3) is well-versed in budgeting for life as a Swiftie. We sat down with her to talk about fandom, how she plans for big experiences and why she believes the rewards of being a fan outweigh its costs.

What does being a “fan girl” mean to you?

Amy: I love connecting with artists and their music. When something speaks to me or elicits an emotion, I have to explore that feeling. According to the running list on my phone, I’ve been to about 41 concerts in my life. I joke about it a lot, but I genuinely believe live music is one of the most beautiful human experiences.

How much do you think you’ve spent on your favourite artist?

Oh boy. Considering I’ve been a Swiftie since I was six years old, I’ve probably spent in the tens of thousands of dollars on concerts, music, merchandise, and even movies and clothing.

Wow! You’re officially a certified fan girl! What are some of the most surprising costs that have come with fandom?

I didn’t expect to ever be going to the movies! Her recent film releases have cost about $15 – $20 per ticket. I’ve also spent money on supplies to make costumes and friendship bracelets to wear to her concerts. Though people are usually most surprised by my Swiftie tattoos!

Being a fan girl doesn’t have to cost a lot—it just depends on what kinds of purchases are meaningful and worthwhile for you.

What’s the return on investment for your experiences as a fan?

I wish I could put into words what I get from a show or music release.

It’s crazy how someone can put what you’re going through into words—and do it so beautifully. And when you realize there’s a whole community that feels the same way, you no longer feel alone. The cost of a concert ticket or new album feels insignificant compared to the feeling of being seen.

How do you prepare financially for concerts?

Saving for concerts is much easier with a little notice. Knowing about a show a few months before tickets go on sale gives me time to save. But sometimes, they become available days after the concert is announced, which doesn’t always allow me to prepare. Then I have to adjust my budget after the fact. That said, I always go into the sale knowing how much I’m willing to spend.

Once tickets are purchased, I can begin saving for costumes and the trip, as most of the concerts I go to aren’t held in my city.

What are your best tips for fans looking to secure concert tickets? And how can they attend while on a budget?

My number one piece of advice is to sign up for the concert’s pre-sale. Pre-sales give you an extra try at getting tickets, and if it doesn’t work out, you can try during the general sale too.

As tempting as it is, always avoid buying from ticket resellers or third-party sources—especially for concerts by big artists. They know the demand and will take advantage of it. If you need tickets to a sold-out show, you should only purchase them from someone you trust or the official resale website.

For those on a budget, I’d advise that you have a set price of what you’re willing or able to spend on tickets, and don’t go over it. Another good way to save money is to find people to go with. That way, you can split the cost of your hotel and other expenses!

With the rising cost of concert tickets, how do you choose which shows to attend? What do you do if you can’t afford tickets?

When artists release their tour dates, I look at flights to the cities they’re playing in. Getting an idea of which flights are the most budget-friendly helps me choose which concerts I’ll try to get a ticket for.

If I’m unable to attend a concert in person, there are almost always listening parties and events happening locally. Social media is a great place to look for things like this! I would even go as far as reaching out to your favourite restaurant or pub and suggesting a themed night—sometimes it just takes someone willing to put it together!

You went to the Eras concert four times! What’s the value in seeing an artist more than once—and how does that decision impact your budgeting?

I’m almost always down for a concert. I’ve seen many artists more than once, and I keep going back because I love sharing that moment with them and with others.

Generally, I try to stick to the 50/30/20 rule (50% of my income goes to bills, 30% goes to spending and 20% is saved). This strategy will give me the freedom I need to continue enjoying these experiences for the long term.

How has being a dedicated fan fulfilled you, or led to new opportunities?

So many—including this one! I never imagined I’d get to talk so much about my favourite artist in connection with an important topic like finance!

I’m also an ambassador for official Swiftie dance parties and help host them throughout Alberta. Fans get to dress up, take photos and belt their favourite songs. I’ve met some amazing people through this experience.

I used to be a little embarrassed about my passion for music. But over the years, it’s helped me embrace who I am—and part of that is not denying myself what brings me happiness in life. I’ve had some wonderful opportunities that I’m forever grateful for, all because a blonde cat lady decided to start writing music.

It’s clear that with the right financial strategies, fandom gives far more back in memories and meaning than what it takes in dollars. That’s the type of investment we can always get behind.

Our favourite pop icon’s latest album is now available, meaning there are countless new ways to show up as a fan. Swifties can attend the theatrical release and purchase custom merchandise available on the official website. And while a tour is yet to be announced, there’s still plenty to get excited about—and budget for. Because managing your money with confidence never goes out of style.
